Abstract

Background: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital heart disease, with an estimated incidence of 2–6 per 1,000 live births. Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous transcatheter closure of VSD using different occlusion devices in a resource-limited, real-world setting. Methods: A retrospective single-center study was conducted at Basra Specialized Cardiac Hospital, Iraq, including patients who underwent percutaneous transcatheter VSD closure between August 2020 and August 2024. A total of 87 patients with various VSD types were enrolled. Procedural success, immediate and follow-up residual shunt, and procedure-related complications were assessed. Results: Transcatheter VSD closure was successful in 93.1% of cases. Residual shunt was observed in 21% of patients at the time of closure; however, most residual defects resolved during follow-up, resulting in a long-term residual shunt rate of 5%. Major complications were uncommon, with aortic incompetence occurring in 3.3% of patients, heart block in 2.2%, and acute hemolysis in 2.2% of patients. Conclusions: Percutaneous transcatheter closure of VSD was safe and effective in our center, with a high procedural success rate and a low incidence of major complications. Although immediate residual shunt was relatively common, most defects resolved during follow-up, resulting in a low long-term residual shunt rate.
